Occupational Therapy Assessments
Occupational Therapy evaluations at Ovspring focuses on children's functional performance skills, including activities of daily living, at home and school. What skills are targetted at an Occupational Therapy Evaluation? What is the typical duration for an evaluation?
Typically, occupational therapy evaluations can range from one to three sessions (of between 60 to 90 mins). At times, more than one session may be needed, depending on the complexity of issues presented or other factors.
Skills targeted include gross motor (including balance, postural control and coordination), fine motor (including bilateral hand use, manipulation and dexterity), tactile discrimination, eye-hand coordination, visual-perceptual and visual-motor abilities, self care and social skills.
Deficits in the above areas will manifest in different ways; for instance, muscle strength/endurance may be seen as clumsiness and fatigue. Problems with tactile issues may manifest as aversion to certain types of clothing or foods and over-or-under responsiveness to pain or injury. Poor range of motion, deficits in eye/hand coordination, problems with fine motor ability, and decreased visual perception often result in poor performance in sports, poor handwriting, and will likely lead to problems with academic performance. In addition, the child's functional abilities, such as self-care, may be impacted, as the child may not be able to function at a developmentally appropriate level.
Ultimately, the occupational therapist looks at your child's occupation. As children develop, the function in varied occupations or roles from self-care to play to schoolwork; the occupational therapist's goal is to allow the child to perform as independently and successfully as possible in their chosen or developmentally appropriate roles.

Are School Functional Assessments available?
Our professionals are also available to go into schools for assessments and can advise on classroom modification suggestions to help the child function optimally in the school environment. In addition, consultations are available on splinting, adaptive equipment use, and enuresis / bed-wetting. How about the Assessment Report? Occupational Therapy Evaluation report may be requested as a separate item. Assessment reports serve as a useful record of observations and baseline of a child's abilities. Reports are requested for different reasons by parents and agencies, eg. during transition points in a child's education. If you need a report written up, you must request for it at the point of appointment confirmation.
